More than 25 Tuition Free Master’s Degree Programmes at the University of Bergen, Norway is open for applications until December 1, 2018 for 2019/20 academic year.
All of our master’s programmes have a duration of two years. Generally, the second year is devoted to writing your master’s thesis.

Note that the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design operate with other application deadlines than the above listed studies.

Admission to master’s programmes for applicants from outside the European Union/EEA and Switzerland.
Applicants who are not citizens of a country within the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland must follow these 5 steps to submit a complete application.

Master’s degree application procedures for Nordic citizens and applicants residing in Norway

Study programmes starting in August

  • The application portal opens 1 February.
  • The application deadline is 15 April
  • The deadline for submitting documents: 15 April / 1 July if you finish your Bachelor’s degree in the spring semester
For applications to Master’s programmes in Fine art, Music and Design, different deadlines and admission procedures must be followed.
Study programmes starting in January



  • The application portal opens 1 October
  • The application deadline is 1 November

Application Procedures (common to all)

Before you start your application for admission, please check that you have the required academic background. Only applicants who meet the admission requirements and show the necessary documentation are qualified. If you are not qualified by 1 December, your application will unfortunately be rejected.
Admission to UiB is highly competitive. Approximately 8 % of international applicants are granted admission.
CHECKLIST – ACADEMIC BACKGROUND



  1. You must have obtained a bachelor’s degree, normally of minimum 4 years’ duration. Your degree must have been issued from a formally recognised university or university college. You can find the specific requirements for your home country in the country list.
  2. You should have obtained a minimum grade of 2nd Class Upper Division, grade B or the equivalent to be able to compete for a place of study.
  3. Your degree must include courses equalling at least 1.5 years of full-time studies in a subject relevant to the programme you apply for.
  4. You must check if the programme you wish to apply for has additional admission requirements. Check the list of Master’s programmes in English listed above.
  5. You must document your English language proficiency, see Step 2 for details.
Are you completing your Bachelor’s degree in the semester after the deadline? 
UiB cannot grant conditional admission to non-EU applicants, therefore you are unfortunately not qualified to apply at this time.
Applicants who are not native speakers of English must document their English language proficiency by taking an internationally recognised English test.



The result must be uploaded to your application no later than the deadline 1 December. Please remember to schedule your test early enough.
Applicants from some English speaking African countries, and applicants with a degree taught in English from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Middle East are not exempt from submitting an English language test.
  1. Choose English language in the upper right corner.
  2. Choose International Applicant.
  3. Click “Register new international applicant” and follow the instructions given.
    • Make sure your personal information is correct: contact address, e-mail, mobile phone number, preferred language, etc.
    • Use your private address, not your university address. It is important that you enter the city code/post code and city.
  4. Click on “Save” to finish the registration. You will be redirected to the login page.
    • An email confirming your registration has been sent to your registered e-mail address
    • This email also contains your password for logging in.
  5. Log on to Søknadsweb and start the application process.

  1. Complete “My Profile” – click “Next”.
  2. Choose New application: “Master’s Programmes in English for Non-European Union applicants”.
  3. Select the programme(s) you wish to apply for as shown above. You may choose to apply for two programmes in a prioritized order.
  4. Click “Save”.

Document requirements

You must upload the documents as PDF-files of good quality and:
  • We require all documents to be scanned from original documentation.
  • If the original language of your documents is not English or a Scandinavian language, officially certified copies of a translation to one of these languages must accompany certified copies of your documents in the original language.

You must upload: 

  1. CV including your educational background.
  2. Secondary School certificate / High School Diploma.
  3. University degree certificate(s)/diploma(s) with a grading scale.
  4. Transcript of records (an official statement listing courses/subjects you have completed at your university).
  5. Documentation of English language proficiency.
  6. Copy of your passport or picture ID including full name, date of birth and gender.
  7. Motivation letter, maximum 450 words.
  8. Check if the master’s programme you wish to apply for has any additional requirements.
  9. You must document sufficient funding to obtain a residence permit for studies. Valid forms of documentation of funds:
    • Financing provided by applicant: Recent bank statement/transcript in your name showing possession of the required amount (NOK 116 369).
    • Financing provided by sponsor: Guarantee letter and recent official bank statement/transcript showing possession of the required amount (NOK 116 369).
    • A letter confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan from your home country.
Click “Next”.

Application receipt

Check the receipt and click “Done”. We will also send the receipt to your registered e-mail.
You have finished your application, what’s next?
You can change your application until the deadline 1 December. The status of your application will be Under consideration on Søknadsweb until we have finished the processing.

Admission Process

1 Nov – 1 DecApplication period: You can change your application and upload new documents until the deadline 1 December.
1 Dec – 1 FebRegistration period: We check that the applications meet the formal requirements.
1 Feb – 1 AprilProcessing period: Complete applications will be processed in cooperation with the faculties and departments.
Mid-AprilOffer of admission: Applicants who are offered admission to UiB will have the result and their Letter of Acceptance published on Søkandsweb. You will also be notified by e-mail.
End of AprilRejections: Applicants who are not offered admission will be informed by e-mail at the end of April.
By 1 MayOffer of admission: Applicants with an offer of admission must accept or decline the offer of admission.
By 15 MayStudent housing: Apply for student housing as soon as possible and before you apply for a residence permit.
By 1 JuneDeposit money: In order to obtain a residence permit for studies, you have to deposit money to SiB’s Deposit Account for International Students.
By 1 JuneResidence permit: Apply for a residence permit for studies.
